Ever since moving to Geneva I was looking for ways to photograph the biggest events going on here – and these are surely the ones happening at Palexpo – the international exhibition and congress centre.
At first I was hoping to shoot the Geneva International Motor Show, but it got cancelled during the pandemic. I was lucky though to score a commission on another major event organized by Palexpo – Les Automanes.
Photographing such an event means strolling 12km/8-9h a day through the vast halls trying to create images that would stand up to the rank of the massive event.
The tricky part about photographing such an event is to show its scale and popularity while complying with GDPR. I have to show people in the photos without showing their faces – the only exception being the performers. I could stick to showing people from the back, but it would become unattractive and boring if too much. I tried to make the photographs classic, clean and readable, but still retain a surprising element in each one of them.
